Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Electric Vehicle Charging Station Cost & Requirements

The electric vehicle charging station has become an integral part while owning electric vehicles. On average, 80% of these electric vehicles are taking place at homes only.

In the approach towards the safe, pollution-free conservative environment, technology is advancing to great heights where new and new inventions are taking place daily. In addition to many other advancements, Electric Vehicles had come out in the market. Now, the question has arrived for the charging of these electric vehicles.

As per the infrastructure guidelines which have been laid by the government, the setup of an electric vehicle charging station is mandatory at every 3kms and 25kms in cities and highways on both sides, respectively. For the purpose of long-range and heavy-duty vehicles, the charging stations are required to be set up at every 100kms at each side of the road and mainly on highways. But presently the guidelines which have been set do exist nowhere and there is a huge electric vehicle charging station requirement at the moment.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Electric Vehicle Charging Station Chargers comes into three variants:

  1. Level 1 Chargers
  2. Level 2 Chargers
  3. DC Fast Chargers

Level 1 Charger:

  • Uses 120V AC plug
  • Do not require any additional equipment
  • Often used at homes
  • Delivers 2-5 miles/hour charging range
  • Least expensive

There are many electric car charging stations manufacturers who also including Leviton, AeroVironment.

Level 2 charger:

  • Residential and commercial usages i.e. 240V and 208 V plugs respectively
  • Delivers 10 to 60 miles per hours of charging range.
  • Takes approximately 2 hours to fully charge the electric cars

The level 2 electric car charger includes manufacturers like Juicebox, clipper creek, siemens.

DC fast chargers/Level 3 chargers/CHAdeMO electric vehicle charger:

  • Delivers 60 to 100 miles of charging range.
  • Takes in just 20 minutes to fully charge the car.
  • Commercial and industrial applications.
  • High powered and highly specialised are required to install and maintain.

Mitsubishi ‘i’ and Nissan leaf are cars that are DC fast charger-enabled cars.

An initiative of government:

The government’s FAME scheme phase 2 implies that there is a plan to install approximately 1000+ electric vehicle charging stations by 2023.
The government has also asked the companies to bid for this project to bring it into force as soon as possible.

Electric vehicle charging station cost:

The cost for setting up of electric charging station varies from rupees 1lac to 40 lacs(commercials) . The average calculation of cost depends upon the type of charger, we are installing. If we consider a broader scenario and supply the level 3/CHAdeMO type charger which has its commercials and industrial applications, below is the estimate.

Approximate costINR 15,00,000
New Electricity ConnectionINR 7,50,000
Civil worksINR 2,50,000
EVSE Management Software + IntegrationINR 40,000
Technicians, Maintenance, etcINR 3,50,000
Promotions and advertisementINR 50,000
Land LeaseINR 6,00,000

Total Approximate INR 40,00,000 or $ 55,000 for a commercial Charging station (including setup and land at lease).

Average Infrastructure electric vehicle charging station requirements:

  • Transformer with subsequent substation and safety equipment must be installed.
  • 33/11 kV cable with related equipment is required for the purpose of metering.
  • Civil work should be appropriate.
  • Need for adequate space to charge and entry/exit of the vehicle.
  • Necessary local certifications.

In comparison to the traditional vehicle, there is only 1% of electric vehicles in India. Although, the sale of this electric vehicle is rising and thus leading to the greater requirements of the EV charging stations. There are many electric car charging station manufacturers who are working with great efficiency to become the best business operators for themselves and for the environment.

Primarily, it has been made clear by the government that each and every individual is free and independent of their choice and decision to set up electric vehicle charging stations throughout the country. But it has its legislations that the station should meet the standards of the power ministry. So, if anyone plans to set up their own electric vehicle charging station, there are only a few infra requirements which are needed to be followed along with getting the right vendor and location.

It completely depends upon the individual to understand the different type of electric vehicle charger they want to install;level1, which is the basic one and hence has a slow speed of charging, or the widely known level 3 charger type which operate with DC current and provide the fast speed of charging.
