California-based solar electric vehicle charging technology company intelligent is introducing what it claims is the world’s first DC-to-DC solar-powered hybrid two-way EV charger.
Enteligent will launch its new product this week at Intersolar North America 2023 in Long Beach, California. Drawing power from rooftop solar, the solar EV charger can deliver 25 kW of fast DC charging, three times faster than AC Tier 2 EV chargers while being vehicle compatible with the home (V2H) and the vehicle to the network (V2G). ) capabilities.
Electric vehicle owners currently plug their cars into home chargers that are powered by a stream of alternating current (AC) power generated from the electrical grid. But EV batteries run on direct current (DC), which requires power to be converted from AC to DC in the charging process. AC to DC conversion is inefficient and results in power loss and longer charging time.
Enteligent says that converting its charger from DC to DC results in 13% energy savings, and direct DC charging bypasses the EV’s internal conversion electronics, reducing charging time.
