Suzuki Will Launch Jimny EV in The European Market By 2026

Suzuki’s Jimny has long been a popular off-road vehicle, thanks to its compact dimensions, rugged construction, and impressive capabilities. However, the high CO2 emissions of the petrol version have been a major obstacle to its sales in Europe, as it can only be sold as a commercial vehicle in the region. But with the recent announcement of a forthcoming electric jimny things are about to change for the better.

Launch on the European market

Suzuki is reportedly preparing to launch the Jimny EV in Europe, with the three-door version set to hit the market first. This move makes a lot of sense since the emissions of the gasoline version have been a major obstacle to its sales in Europe. By going electric, the Jimny can finally shed its status as a commercial vehicle and be sold as a regular passenger car.

However, turning a body-on-frame SUV into an electric one is no easy feat. The Jimny’s compact dimensions and special ladder frame chassis make it a challenging vehicle to redesign. But Suzuki has a few tricks up its sleeve to make it work.

battery and motor

One option is to install the battery pack inside the frame, which would protect the battery and serve as a packaging solution. A 60kWh battery, similar to that used in the eVX concept shown at Auto Expo, could be used for the Jimny, and double-decker battery modules could also be used if more space is needed. Another option is to place the battery under the frame, like in the Toyota Hilux, with a protector installed underneath.

Suzuki will also need to install a motor on both axles to maintain Jimny’s off-road capabilities. With no engine or transmission up front, there will be plenty of room for the front axle, and the rear electric motor is likely to be packed close to the rear differential. The absence of a transfer case will save weight, but with a big battery pack and two motors, the Jimny EV is likely to be heavy. However, two axes that provide a higher level of regen should help offset the weight penalty.

Design

One intriguing possibility with the Jimny EV is that the five-door version could gain some additional practicality as well, with a ‘frunk’ at the front and some luggage space at the rear. This would be a welcome addition for buyers looking for more storage options, giving the Jimny a more practical edge without sacrificing off-road prowess.
